More Important than the Election

voteTomorrow is the big day when Americans will vote for a terrible person so the other more terrible person does not win.

The political parties, the media, and the special interests got what they wanted. They have propagandized people so their supporters think those who differ with them are idiots.

One person will become the President of the United States, the other will make millions on book deals, the speaking circuit, or as a spokesperson for some political faction. Those two people will do just fine.

I am more concerned about you and your neighbors and family members with whom you can not have a discussion about certain issues for fear that it will become volatile. Whoever wins, they will still be your neighbors, co-workers, and hopefully, still claimed as family members. They are more important than your political opinions, even if you think they’re nuts. If you can’t find a way to have a civil conversation about these matters, at least find a way to get along. People are more important than politics.

Sadly, we have lost our ability to disagree without being disagreeable. Discussions have been reduced to sound bytes. Zingers, and drive by verbal assaults have replaced conversations where people talk and listen to each other.

I have always disagreed the alarmists who proclaim the downfall of our country; not anymore. We are in deep trouble because our very system of government is at risk, along with the relational fabric of our culture. For our nation to work, there has to be real conversation, give and take, compromise, and a mutual sense of respect.

We have serious work to do, but the place to start is right where we all live with the people in our own world.

This segment from 60 Minutes nails the current national mood.
