We Are All Artists

Yes, you are correct, it has been a long time since I have posted here. Yet, the mistress/addiction/passion called writing is always beckoning. I have continued to take assignments from the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida for their digital and print magazines which has been a fun learning experience for me. I do interviews with interesting people involved in ministries in the US and other parts of the world. But I have so much more to try to express with words.

I need to be making things. My vintage lighting business, Doo-Dads has been requiring my attention for the last several months. Maybe, one of these days I will find a rhythm to divide my time more predictably between the two pursuits. I’ll work on that.

For most of my life, I never thought of myself as an artist or a maker. Now, I can’t conceive of things being any other way. I am thankful for that.

There is a certain artfulness and creativity that goes into doing any job well, whether it is weekly lawn maintenance, housecleaning, or the thousands of regular, inglorious tasks that must be done. I know we usually feel like they are mundane and unfulfilling, but our attitude and the way we do things makes all the difference. There is a sense of fulfillment that comes from doing things well and putting our own stamp on the job, no matter what it is. That is creativity.

My passions these days are writing, guitar playing, and vintage lighting design, especially restoring and upcycling old things, giving them new life.

The reason that I have time to write these words today is because we are on a little fall get-a-way, re-visiting our favorite secluded Georgia mountain cabin. As I sit on the porch listening to the birds and peepers, and the guggling creek, they lovely natural soundtrack that encourages relaxed creativity.

Honestly, I have been a little off my game this trip, feeling like I lost a little of my mojo, assuming I had some to lose. I think it was all the driving and having seen all of this before (It is our second visit here.). Then I remembered, things are good at home because that’s where my guitar and my lighting workshop live. I have blessed life of creativity and a privileged life in which we can take wonderful vacations.

I am beginning to see that we are all artists or have the capacity to be such.
