The Blank Slate

Welcome to day one of 2025. Every day of this entire year is “yet to be determined.” I have a sense of excitement at the beginning of every year. There are new things I want to explore, new disciplines I want to acquire, and some crappy things I want to leave far, far behind.

The slate is indeed blank in that nothing has yet been written. However, we drag the same, old us into the new year. Like a poorly erased chalk board of old, you can see the “ghosting” of what was there before, and it affects our newly written aspirations.

The memories, the people, and incidents that shaped our lives are as strong as ever. We can’t simply wipe them away because we turned a page on a calendar.

There will be curve balls that come our way this year, things we didn’t expect or want. How we respond to those things is more important than the things we respond to. It’s the part we can control.

Repetition is a key factor. There are certain things I remind myself every day in prayer.

Change that requires the elimination of an unwanted habit is the hardest. Replacement works better than just trying real hard not to do it. Replace a bad habit with a good one, something you enjoy.

This new year will have its ups and downs. We will probably rise to the challenge at times and not so much at other times. There will be times that we will flat out fail. God gives us grace. He is used to our failures, but it doesn’t change how he loves us. We need to accept his grace and move on in strength.

Rejoice if the arrow is pointed the right direction.

Maybe the most important thing about moving into 2025 it the commitment to get back up when we stumble. It’s not just the year that is a blank slate, every day is a blank slate.

Happy New Year, friends!
