Safe Distance

We should have known

Poised, ready to pounce

Shocked by the audacity

Grieved by the brutality

This living room war

This you tube terror

These people like us

All we do is discuss

As we watch at a safe distance.

Every night bloody bodies

Scores, hundreds, thousands

Soldiers, mothers, children

Why kill even one?

Leaving everything

Livelihood, home, husband

Land, father, and mother

Bag in one hand, child in the other

As we watch at a safe distance.

No one laughing at the comedian

Bravely leading from the front

Superpower, moving slowly

Don’t dare provoke the bully

Will the dictator win?

Former glory, more territory

Who’s the next conquest?

Remember this urgent request

As we watch at a safe distance.

Mutually assured destruction

Still a deterrent?

Given a planet to enjoy

Still, we find ways to destroy

There is no safe distance.
